ADDICTED TO LIFE: Part 3. What do we miss out on?

We miss out on so much in life… because we attach or ‘grasp too tightly’.

We become ‘attached’ in some way to people or material things. We have become habituated or addicted to living this way.

We have become ‘addicted to life!’ Background information on this theme is available in Part 1 and Part 2 of this blog.

In Part 3 we now continue a discussion of ‘what we miss out on’ and why we miss out?

WE CHOOSE TO POSSESS OR ‘HAVE THINGS’, RATHER THAN ‘JUST BE’ OUR TRUE SELF. We decide to acquire things for our own exclusive or limited use. We mostly hide away and we guard it from strangers. Similarly, by not freely sharing our talents & gifts with others we diminish our own true nature. Our true nature is to help & serve others!

BY NOT SHARING OR HELPING OTHERS, WE DENY OURSELVES REAL HAPPINESS.

By ‘hiding away’ both our gifts & material acquisitions, we diminish them! We limit ourselves to a few fleeting glimpses of our gift or prize, for we fear showing it. By ‘grasping so tightly’, we crush the fragile essence of its beauty. We damage its true delicate nature. To make matters worse, we are too busy to really appreciate & savour this beauty!

WE MISS OUT ON HAVING WHAT WE MOST WANT: INNER PEACE & FULFILLMENT.

We miss out on presenting to others what we really have: our true worth. We are left grasping ‘the crude substance’ of our physical labour but have lost the exquisite essence & beauty of our grand nature.

WE MISS THE BIG PERSPECTIVE AND AN APPRECIATION OF LIFE.

We distract ourselves instead by just working hard for a living: by acquiring more material things. We try so hard to do ‘the best we can’ within our material circumstances. But ‘we miss the forest for the trees.’ We miss the beauty of the big picture - the broader perspective - the grandeur of what is unfolding! What else do we miss out on? We are too preoccupied to savour the sublime sensuality of the current moment.

WE DENY OURSELVES A SATISFYING & LESS STRESSFUL EXISTENCE!

We put ourselves under so much stress and strain, to live to some other person’s expectation. The values we have taken on, are not our own inner values. These have been ‘conditioned’ or programmed into us, in our past, usually in early childhood.

Living up to the expectations of others wastes our energy and depletes our defences. We are then more vulnerable to dis-order and clinical disease.

WE REDUCE OUR OPTIMUM HEALTH & WELLBEING.

Not only do we compromise our physical health, we also waste precious time by pursuing meaningless distractions and temporary pleasures.

WE MISS SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO EXCEL.

We avoid trying the strategies for long term happiness. We limit our full potential & our fulfillment. By leading a life of risk avoidance & temporary pleasures, we lessen our freedom. We don’t experience all that we want to enjoy. We limit our potential to achieve what we truly want.

WE REDUCE OUR OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE.

There is however an alternative – we can change ourselves!
